Is one dog year really seven human years?
No. The «1 dog year = 7 human years» rule is debunked. AAHA and AVMA use a non-linear curve: a dog's first year is roughly 15 human years, the second adds about 9 (so 2 dog years ≈ 24 human years), then each adult year adds 4 to 7 human years depending on breed size.
Why does breed size change the answer?
Smaller breeds live longer and age more slowly in adulthood (about 4 human years per dog year). Larger and giant breeds compress more of life into fewer years (5 to 7 human years per dog year past age 2). Lifespan estimates and senior-stage thresholds shift accordingly.
How do you calculate a cat's age?
AAFP guidelines: year 1 = 15 human years, year 2 adds 9 (cumulative 24), then each subsequent year adds 4. Cats are size-agnostic, but indoor vs outdoor lifestyle affects lifespan more than breed.
